Starts in the midst of a storm at sea, where a vermin vessel, the Kill Claw, is fighting to remain afloat with her evil crew and two captives -- a hog prince and a young mousemaid, both dibbuns. The captain, Seeve [[ferret\\Dartpaw]], pays the young ones a visit in his cabin, asking if they know where their parents are. The hedgehog, being older, answers with the accusation of murder -- Seeve denies it and tells him, "I never kill creatures who don't need to die only ones I see fit to. They are probably searching Hamma isle at this moment, you'll never see that place again..." (qtd. Dartpaw)
The hedgehog offers his life for that of Nikkle's, the mousemaid, who cries. Seeve puts his dagger to her nose and tells her to shut up, then reveals both the danger the ship is in and that there was an old squirrel captive, too. The hedgehog, yelling, accuses Seeve of murder; the captain says the squirrel was sick and begged to be put out of his misery, to which the hog repeats "you killed him!" Seeve pretends to throw his dagger at him but stops, repeating that none of them will see their homes. Nikkle asks where he's from; Seeve tells her it's none of her business, then explains they are going to a place called Vermin Skull, a secret island known only to corsairs. Seeve intends to use the hog as a bounty for the evil queen there. Privately, Hamma, the hog, vows to kill Seeve.
While this conversation is happening, Mouse-ear [[weasel\\mousear]], the first mate, is harrassing the crew into keeping the ship afloat. She does not miss seeing Seeve "tuck himself safely inside his warm cabin with the prisoners," and doesn't think highly of him for it. She remarks the weather hadn't been good since they'd left Vermin Skull, and we get a brief snippet from her past -- her father, also a captain, had raised her to "think fast and act faster," then got himself slain by an otter, wherein Mouse-ear gained a shipful of slaves to sell and "her own life to govern." When the ship eventually calms and sails on with no apparant damage, she takes out her frustration on a hapless searat.
Throughout all of this, Cadwen [[hare\\iolana]], a vermin hare working for the queen, is waiting for the Killclaw to land. It would seem she had been waiting for them for some time.
In his cabin, Seeve notes they'll be seeing Vermin Skull after all while Hamma tries not to cry. The captain locates Mouse-ear and orders her to report, revealing the queen of Vermin Skull will drop the fee for Hamma if they aren't there in two days. He even waves his knife in her face, then sits down in a chair a crewbeast has brought out for him.
Mouse-ear, unperturbed, assures him with a smirk that they'll be within sight of land in a very short time. She is correct, but it is past nightfall when the ship is finally beached. Cadwen and a small envoy of the queen's guards are waiting for them, and Mouse-ear wastes no time in informing the hare that the queen won't get her prisoners unless she pays up.
Seeve almost strikes his first mate but changes his mind, rebuking her and reminding her that any pay they get is his, as he is the captain. He sends four crewbeasts with Hamma and Nikkle to the queen -- Cadwen's envoy promptly takes custody of them -- and warns Mouse-ear about angering the queen before giving her some gold and telling her to relax in a tavern somewhere. Cadwen tells them that the queen would like to thank them personally and also warns against making her wait.
In the end, Lurana the queen of Vermin Skull [[Dartpaw]] only sees Hamma and Nikkle. She taunts them for a while, Hamma yells and calls her names, and she even gives him a sword and tells him if he can kill her, he'll rule the island. He tries but can't bring himself to do it. Lurana goes back to taunting, and the encounter ends with the hog and mouse being taken to the dungeons; we learn Lurana intends to turn them to her side and use them to conquer their own homeland.
