Took place in the early morning at Salamandastron. Lt. Jameson Sersea [[Tracy]] got up earlier than his recruits to avoid eating breakfast with them and went through some exercises before jogging across the shoreline. He was met by Saudie [[Admin]], who was also up early, training with the motive of proving her critics wrong -- apparently, most seem to believe she was too young to join the patrol. They carry on a short conversation whilst, unbeknown to them, Arik [[Tommyspud]] is rowing to shore after a short skirmish.
Adaerna [[Vela]] joins the lieutenant and Saudie, "eager to please and unable to sleep." It is revealed she is one of Sersea's recruits. They carry on with some small talk before Sersea, "feeling outnumbered," meant to leave the recruits and get on with his training. Saudie races him, however, and loses when she trips. All the while Arik is getting closer to shore. The hares learn that what tripped Saudie was a fox [[Admin]], apparently half-drowned. Immediately after Adaerna is wondering what to do with the fox -- who is awake and coughing up sand -- Arik dives onto shore, finally garnering the attention of the patrollers. Arik is thrilled to be on land again, but saddened by the loss of his boat.
Saudie approaches Arik while Adaerna tries to lift the fox, who tells her she's breaking his back, causing Adaerna to feel stupid. About this time, Daik Longarrow [[Chepsonek]] , a badger, who had been watching from afar, attempted to approach but fell backwards with a yell.
