Tanneth
Twitch
Iolana
Emmel
Sandfoot
Seaford
Dwimbolt
Name: Tanneth Torry Turcotte
Nicknames, aliases: Tanners, Tann
Thread(s): What if you met..., Other RP; not in plot arc.
Species: Hare
Gender: Female
Age: 21 seasons
Alignment: Good \\ Not in overarching plot, or she'd be at [Salamandastron]
Occupation:
Training to be recruited as a runner for the Long Patrol, the lowest rung on the military ladder; otherwise, does the odd jobs with other hares not on Patrol (mending and sewing, tending gardens, cleaning, and all that other stuff the books never really mention.) (....she hates it.)
Appearance:
She is neither incredibly beautiful nor horrendously ugly. She's noticably pudgy but not overly obese (ergo the "training" to be a runner). Not short, but can hardly be considered "lanky" like most hares. No notable scars or markings. Brown eyes. Brown fur, very dark on her back with black running down her spine and throughout her fur; fades to a lighter, creamier brown at her stomach and throat.
Possessions:
Aside from her clothing, not much; living at Salamandastron, Tanneth shares most things with her family or otherbeasts.
Personality:
Overall, she's a cheerful individual who thinks she's in love with the Patrol and is actually devoted to food. She is very, very rarely, if ever, depressed and isn't the type to feel sorry for herself, though she may shift blame around a bit.
Tanneth, like the vast majority of Long Patrollers in the books, does not like vermin. This does not mean she would kill a baby stoat if she found one abandoned; she wouldn't raise it, either. She wouldn't shoot a vermin in the back unless in battle. Vermin are vermin to Tanneth, no matter how friendly or "good" they may be in actuality.
Good traits
- Boisterous
- Cheerful
- Friendly
- Reasonably intelligent
- Brave
- Passionate
- Forgiving
Bad traits
- Lazier than she'd like to admit
- Reckless
- Gluttonous
- Excessive
- Hot-tempered
- Doesn't always think before jumping in
- Quick to judge others
Abilities / Strengths:
As stated, Tanneth is proficient at sewing and darning, and planting and cultivating the mountain gardens and groves. (She is not an expert an either.) She can use a stave and sling with moderate success, and has a very limited knowledge in the use of a rapier.
Weaknesses / Shortfalls:
Like all hares, Tanneth can run and put on impressive bursts of speed; however, she is slower than her peers and cannot keep up a sprint for very long. Along with this low endurance, she also has low eye-footpaw coordination, though she is not outright clumsy. And, of course, she is a mighty eater and devotes more time and thought to food than any sane beast ought. As implied above, Tanneth is not much of a fighter.
Relationships:
Parents: Pvt. Callaghan-Turcotte and Drill Sgt. B. Turcotte
Grandfather: Col. Callaghan
Friends: A few, all patrollers but for one, an elderly harewife who spends most of her time in the sick bay.
Enemies: None, or no outright rivals to speak of.
Coworkers: Other beasts, old, retired, or off-duty for one reason or another, that also spend time washing, mending, and the like.
Other / Creator comments:
Sgt. Turcotte isn't her real father.GASP! A little drama and mystery never hurt anybeast. xD

History / Background

Tanneth wants to join the Long Patrol. She had to drop out/was kicked out of ("bootcamp?" "...."Long Patrol school?") once because she couldn't take the heat, and is trying to get in shape/amend her personality to have a go at it again. When not doing that, she finds herself stuck with old and/or retired harewives/veterans, doing the menial daily chores of the mountain. It is increasingly difficult for her to watch her peers and younger hares join up and pass her by. Yes, I'm still working on this. >.>

She didn't understand. Not really.
Attn.: Private Tannoreth T. Turcotte, Dune Squad, female, 16 seasons:
Tanneth sat on the edge of her assigned bunk in the barracks, alone but for the small piece of parchment she held in her paw. She gazed through it, still as stone, thinking -- trying to work something out. It didn't seem fair. But then, she'd known better all along, really. If you don't have what it takes, you simply don't have what it takes. There are plenty of creatures that don't have what it takes -- it's what makes the Long Patrol so strong, so unique, so... so impossible.
It is our regret to inform you of your change in military status...
It had started out alright... the training, that is. She had joined a score of other hares her age, including two of her dearest friends since dibbunhood. They'd all done terribly the first few days, but once they'd all gotten the drills and marching down, it wasn't so bad. Well, except for Tanneth. She'd never been one for hearty excersize, and the long, daily drill sessions had been brutal. It did not help that her assigned drill instructor was also her own father, and he in turn seemed to think it prudent to be harsher on her than any of the other recruits.
Tanneth thought that was the case, anyway. He was a pretty strict creature to begin with.
...As you no doubt well know, it is understood among all those who wish to join the Long Patrol formally that certain physical, mental, and moral standards must be strictly adhered to at all times...
Tanneth looked up from the letter, blinking rapidly at the rows of bunks across from her; a window near the door was open, letting in a dry, salty draft that stirred her whiskers and irritated her eyes. She wondered how much of a paw her parents had in it. Her father did not seem to think anybeast was good enough for the Patrol, and her mother, upon hearing her daughter had an interest in close-range combat, objected vehemently. The Lady Turcotte had never been one for any kind of fight that didn't include bows. But supposing they had conspired to this end, what would it matter? What could she do about it?
In a way, if the haremaid was honest with herself, this was a relief. The unique sense of comraderie shared between soldiers as well as the rapier lessons had been well worth the experience, to be sure; but there was more to it than that -- much more -- and she didn't enjoy that part. Never had, and probably never would.
A sharp rap on the door caused Tanneth to start, and she jumped to her feet as it opened and a smart-looking officer marched in. He didn't look at the lone haremaid in the room, but addressed the wall in front of him in true military fashion.
"Private Turcotte, marm, h'are ye ready to vacate the premises?"
"Er... yes, I suppose..."
"Then y're t'follow me. Come along." He turned on his heel, never once looking at her, and after a a brief moment of hesitation the length of a heartbeat, Tanneth followed. She clenched her fist, crumpling the letter she'd been reading and rereading and committing to memory, and before marching out the door, she flung it as hard as she could out the open window. Then she left the barracks, once and for all, unsure as to whether or not she'd be coming back.
...You have been found wanting in one or more of these areas, therefore we do hereby inform you of your eviction from the Long Patrol. You may make one more attempt at joining our regiment at a time of your choosing.
Signed,
Patrol General, Regimental Commander, and Drill Instructor in charge to all new recruits
