Abbes Wendyl sat sunning herself on the old wheelbarrow in the orchard. The young mole was an odd choice for abbess, but she was wise beyond her fourteen seasons. She closed her beady black eyes, listening to her friend Roverindon berating the apple that had fallen on his head. "Now then, Mr. Apple, I know that you are exited about Summer, but that doesn't mean that you can go gadding about and bopping poor abbeydwellers on the head, you hear?" Wendyl grinned. She opened one eye, and skillfully flicked it at her friend's tail, giggling like a dibbun instead of an Abbess. She was satisfied by the fox's startled yowl. A young dibbun skipped up, a pretty mousebabe. "Muvver Abbess, when we havin a nameday?" Wendyl chuckled, and spoke, though not in the odd mole dialect. "Soon, Pussywhillow, soon." This, however, did not satisfy Pussywhillow. The Mousebabe whistled sharply, and was immediately surrounded by other dibbuns, crying in high pitched voices. "We want nameday! DAB DAB DAB!" Abbess Wendyl sighed, and headed inside.

But at the door way into great hall, she was accosted by three imposing figures. Tarpin, Torren and Sam Furrower were blocking the doorway with various objects they fondly thought of as weapons. All three had dock leaves tied to their ears. Tarpin Puffed out his chest and stepped forward from the other two. “M’fraid yor gonna ‘ave t’stop right there madam! H’I’m Cap’n Floppears an’ this is my out post, see!” Sam giggled excitedly so that a tremor ran all the way to his little stub tail. “Hurr hurr! Burr’aye! No beast c’n go through unlessns theym say ‘ee parssword! ‘ee gotta say e parssword, muvver h’abbess!” Torren was jumping up and down on the sandstone steps. “Yes, yes, yes! And-! Wait… I thought they had to answer a riddle?” Tarpin whirled on the pair, glaring ferociously. “Shusha! Insubordinashun! Silence in da ranks! Nobeast’s gotta answer a riddle! Jus’ the secret question! An’ if’n they c’n do that, they can pass!”

((TIME FOR MY FERRET DIBBUN!!!! MUHAHAHAHA!))
Ringe peered around the corner at the insufferable DAB. She watched as they blocked the path of the abbess, and wished she was not so shy so she could at least have a friend. Suddenly, she heard someone approaching! Gasping, she hid in up against the wall, blending in to the shadows. She watched as Shade the squirrel walked past, heading for the kitchens, and shoving past the DAB with a small sweep of her tail. As Shade dissappeared around the corner, Ringe stepped out from her hiding spot, and stumbled away blindly, bumbing into one of the dibbuns by the door.
"Oof!" She said, as she hit the floor.
Stumbling up, she stammered an apology, and looked at the ground, shy and embarassed.

Abbes Wendyl decided that it was not the time to humor the dibbuns in their game. She sighed again, and said in a commanding tone. "None of that you three. I will not have it. Unless, of course," Here she winked at the small ferret. "You do not want a nameday feast. I was just on my way to see the Friar about preparations." Turning to the little Ferretmaid, she caught her paw. "Come along young one, I see you need someone to play with, and I am not ever going to be too high and mighty to play with the dibbuns in my Abbey." She began lightly tugging the maid's paw. "I think there was a wooden ball around here somewhere."

"Summer is such a fine time in'nit it?" the quiet voice sounded like water over pebbles in a slow brook. The young Fox maid had arrived only a short time before, she'd been traveling for a time and had offered herbs for a nights stay to the mouse at the gates. She'd been let in with a friendly smile and a 'All beast are welcome so long as they come in peace." Her overburdened pack bulged, as always, in strange unpredictable ways. Her thin dagger sat at her side. Even armed thus she still looked about as dangerous as butterfly.

Roverindon Widebrush had been watching the foxmaid. She was a pretty thing, but Rover just shrugged. Another vixen for somebody to try and thrust on me. Then, he ambled over to where Abbess Wendyl was standing with a little ferret maid, and he tossed the dibbun a ball made from woven rushes and filled with moss. He then began dancing 'round a bush in a comical way, wanting to make someone laugh. When nobody did after a few miliseconds of his antics, he took himself into the orchard, and scrambled up the nearest apple tree. Pulling out his book, he began reading aloud to the apple next to him. "Lets see..... oh yes. The stars in the sky are like big balls of fire, like our sun and.............." Here he stopped and munched on the apple.

Laura watched the odd fox. the dancing and the antics. A Fool but atleast he wasn't a cruel fool. She'd met one of those. She watched the ball roll tilting her head. She'd never played before. Slaves didn't play they worked. She wondered if Father would come this way. He'd stop and play with the younglings, then try and cook up a northern meal for the locals. He was a fantastic cook, but his skill with a blade certainly surpassed his skill with food.
"Have any of you seen a large Black Fox? He carries two swords, ones the size of a stoat. He wears a big heavey cloak all the time even if its sweltering out." She carefully controlled her accent. She worked with her hands even as she spoke using her dagger she quickly cut up a few pieces of a strange green cane plant, she smiled at a youngling Mole who sniffed the piece of cane given to him and then scoffed it down.
"Is vurreh good marm." The little moles friends began eating theirs aswell.
"Sugar Cane, it grows far to the east. They use it as a treat for younglings. If you eat it without permission though the Cane Mother will come to you in your sleep and turn you into a Sugar Cane!"

Wendyl dipped her head to the newcomer. "No, miss, I am afraid no black foxes have come this way. Or at least, they escaped my notice." She dropped the ball and walked to the foxmaid. "I am Abbess Wendyl. Welcome to Redwall Abbey. Have you eaten today? If not, I am sure we could find you something to eat." She watched Roverindon for a second before returning her gaze to the vixen.

"Hmm I've eaten, atleast enough to hold me until your cooks can prepare supper. I've heard much about Redwall's feasts and hope to be around for your Summer naming Celebration. My name is Laura. I'm sorry I've been traveling for three days non stop. My footpaws feel like stones." The young fox grimaced at th mention as th words rmindd her of how tired she was. "Father said he'd travel this way. I was to meet him here." She settled her pack on the ground a sprig of Goldenrod slipped out and was quickly tucked back in. Her golden honey colored fur shone and her creamy white looked like fresh whipping cream.

Abbess Wendyl smacked her forehead with her digging claws. "Oh! I should have thought you'd be tired. Would you like to go inside and rest? I am sure we could find you an nice room, even though our only empty ones are near the Infirmary. Would that be alright?" Wendyl was flustered, and annoyed with herself. she should be more confident! She held out her paw to Laura. "I'll have the wallguards watch for your father. Hopefully," Here she looked at the dibbuns guarding the door. "Hopefully, we will be able to get inside so I can ask the good Friar how soon he can get on the feast. But, I am sorry to say, we are having a small problem with getting in." She turned and called Rover. "Rover! Come here please." Roverindon got out of the tree, stashing his book in the boughs as he did so. He loped over to them. Bowing low, with a million flourishes, he addressed Wendyl. "You called, Abbess?" Wendyl signalled a dibbun to stomp on his paw, and answered. "Yes thank you. Can you find a way inside, like a window or something like that, that is easy to enter, so that Miss Laura and I can get in? I am afraid that the main entrance is blocked." Rover jumped up and yelped when the dibbun stepped on his paw. he set his teeth and hissed back through them. "Of course, Abbess, I would be delighted to preform such an honorable duty." And with that, he limped off, favoring his squashed paw. Wendyl chuckled. "The big faker. Don't pay him any mind, Miss, I've seen him squeal if a dragonfly brushes him, and sometimes he will make a huge fuss over nothing, the dramatist. I've no wonder why Syndolyn brought him here after Cheps had to leave."

"You've no worries there, Abbess. I'm an accomplished healer. I can read a faker from the top of a giant oak with half my face covered in bee stings. Besides if the Youngling was any more obvious it'd be a comedy play." Laura chuckled and heft her bag again. "Near the Infirmary is fine, I can trade you some herbs and poultices I've got stored away in here. I have some herbs from lands far to the east that have almost magical fever reducing prowess."

Wendyl chuckled. "No need to pay us, Our doors are always open to those who come in peace." She beckoned for Laura to follow her. "Come on then, and lets see if Rover has found an entrance other than the door. And if it is possible to get in that way." And with that, she trundled off after Roverindon.

The fox followed chuckling. she'd not encounter creatures this people like this since Sanctuary Valley. "S'like Fathers Homeland. So peaceful here. You beasts are like the Valley Dwellers, all you think of is helping and loving."

Ringe grabbed the ball and walked off to her hideaway. As she hid there, she studied the new fox, silently following as they left.

Abbess Wendyl smacked her head with her digging claws when she saw where Roverindon was beckoning from. "Rover! Not that windowsill! That one is for cooling the things that the cooks make! Not for Abbesses and guests to climb through!" Roverindon grinned and sauntered off to the next window, were he slipped through, and a few moments later a step-stool slid out so that Wendyl could scramble in an undignified manner into the Abbey building. She held out her paw to help her new friend through the window. "Valley Dwellers? Now then, you just made me curious. Who are they?"
