Alis sat on a low branch to keep watch. Pulling out a small book she began to read. "Hmm, if the future Matriarch has a female cousin who is of age, she may pass her inheritance to that cousin." she looked up at the hoot of an owl. "A cousin? I have millions. I s'pose Brennadine is oldest. Maybe I should find a way to send her a message." After a while, she tapped Farny, who opened his eyes and took her place. She fell asleep beside Fallo, enjoying the warmth of her brother's body. Her last concious thought was what kind of leader Brenna would be.
She woke when Fallo went to his watch, a cold sweat breaking over her face. She sat up and motioned that she was going to take a short walk. When she got away from the trees that they had been in, she sighed and sat down. "Good grief. I can't stay on the mainland for too much longer. It is a place of much evil. Evil and hatred and sadness. That squirrelmaid today, Maia. She seemed a little over the edge. I wonder what happened to push her. She must have lost somebeast that she thought much of. I knew of one that went mad because of the loss of a loved one........." She remembered the day that Callon had staggered into the village, a broken body held tight within emancipated paws. He was holding Eldendat, his mate, whom he loved very much. She had seen the look in his eyes when they placed Eldendat into her tomb. His normally brown eyes had taken on a blue-ish tinge, and the pupils were whirling slightly. What her parents and brothers didn't know though, was that she had seen Callon throw himself off a cliff, crying out that soon his mind would be whole again. Her father had found him the next day, spread-eagled on the sharp rocks. Alis had never told anybeast how she had witnessed her grandfather's suicide, but she knew that she had seen evil, and a great unhappiness that unleashed itself upon the Island. Alis curled up tighter. Her dream had woken her, and she would have blamed Maia for it if she had not understood. Maia was mad, completely. Nobeast was safe with her, not even Elito, whom Maia seemed to love. What had snapped Maia? Was it a beloved family member? Or maybe it was something like Callon, losing a mate. But hadn't Elito said that Maia had been very young when they found her? Alis crept back to the trees and slipped into the hollow she had formerly been sleeping in. This mainland was a bad place for a maid who had spent her life isolated from evil and ugly death.
